Master of Nursing - Nurse Practitioner

Program Overview

 The Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) program prepares nurse practitioners (NPs) who will work  in a variety of health-care settings with patients of all ages. They will be prepared to achieve advanced clinical and leadership competencies. NPs are equipped to independently diagnose and treat illness, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and manage comprehensive patient care.  

With a broad and autonomous scope of practice, NPs play a vital role in addressing the health-care needs of all Canadians in a wide-range of health care settings. Information about tuitions and fees can be found on the admissions site.

Program Delivery

Courses are offered through live web-conference seminars (synchronous). This live seminar format allows students to actively participate in classroom discussions. For information regarding technology requirements, visit the graduate program technology requirements page.

A student completing the Nurse Practitioner program will be able to:

  • Meet the professional practice, ethical standards, and entry-level competencies for nurse practitioners with respect to the safe and effective delivery of health care to individuals, groups, and populations.  
  • Use the principles of evidence-informed practice and possess the ability to contribute to the body of evidence related to nurse practitioner practice and knowledge  
  • Analyze, evaluate, and apply advanced nursing knowledge to improve health, health equity, and health outcomes. 
  • Demonstrate entry-level nurse practitioner proficiencies, in leadership, interprofessional collaboration, advocacy, education, scholarship, and clinical practice. 
  • ​Demonstrate accountability, autonomy, integrity, and a professional growth mindset in a nurse practitioner role 

There are in-person residency requirements (on-site in Saskatoon) during the program. More information will be shared upon admission.

Advantages of the Nurse Practitioner Program

Web-based classes allow students to participate and actively engage in learning from their home community.

Students can complete the program in two to three years.

The program begins with foundational coursework focused on core competencies of NP practice, including advanced assessment, clinical decision-making, diagnosis, therapeutic management, and leadership. The second half of the program emphasizes supervised clinical practica, allowing students to integrate learning with real-world practice while applying, refining, and consolidating their knowledge and skills. 

Students complete supervised clinical placements in a variety of healthcare settings across Saskatchewan and Canada, guided by experienced faculty and clinical preceptors. These hands-on learning experiences provide opportunities to develop Nurse Practitioner entry-level competencies, collaborate with interprofessional healthcare teams, and build professional networks. Clinical placements are completed in the province or territory where students hold current registered nurse (RN) licensure, allowing them to gain experience within the healthcare system where they are authorized to practice. 

From the beginning of the program, students engage with qualified Nurse Practitioner faculty who bring current clinical expertise, active practice experience, and innovative teaching approaches that foster critical thinking, clinical reasoning, mentorship and student success. 

Professional instruction and support, such as academic advising, clinical placement coordination, student support and outreach, and IT help, are founded on student-centred approaches.
